ATM
SAFETY -- Very Important!
Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) are so much a part of the landscape; it's easy
to take them for granted. Don't let familiarity breed complacency. Does the machine
you regularly use assess a surcharge? Make sure you're willing to pay that price
for the convenience.
When you arrive at an ATM, look around. If you see anything that makes you uncomfortable
or anyone who looks suspicious, keep going. Use another ATM or come back later.
Have your access card ready. While you are fumbling with your wallet, you are
an easy target for a thief. Protect your Personal Identification Number (PIN).
Never write it on your card. If you can't memorize it, include it in a phone
number or an address for a fictitious person. For example, if your PIN is 5677,
you could disguise it in your Aunt Mary's phone number: 555-5677. Beware of "shoulder
surfing." Shield your PIN from onlookers by using your body. Once you complete
your transaction, check to be sure that you have your card and your receipt,
then leave immediately. Avoid counting or otherwise displaying large amounts
of cash. |
